[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Integrating Probiotics in Acne and Rosacea by Raja Sivamani, MD MS AP | 9:00am-9:30am PST ” _builder_version=”3.8″]

Description: Acne and rosacea are chronic inflammatory conditions that appear to have correlations to changes in both the skin and gut microbiome. We will review new evidence for shifts in the gut and skin microbiome in relation to acne and rosacea.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to explain how antibiotics alter the skin and gut microbiome in acne and rosacea.
  2. Participants will be able to restate the evidence for the use of probiotics in acne and rosacea.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Novel Topicals for Use in Acne by Reena Rupani, MD | 9:30am-10:00am PST ” _builder_version=”3.8″]

Description: Despite the popularity and success of many acne medications, including both topical and oral comedolytics and retinoids, there is room for an integrative approach to acne utilizing topical botanical therapies. Frankly, it *feels* good to have a plant-based skincare routine; it conveys a sense of agency to the patient, giving a productive hands-on approach to the skin (rather than squeezing and picking, ie non-productive hands-on behaviors). Botanical extracts and essential oils may augment the effect of traditional therapies, or also help to mitigate side effects. This talk will highlight some botanical ingredients and essential oils that can add to the dermatologists’ therapeutic armamentarium, while also reviewing potential side effects and safety concerns.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to review the available literature on current newly-emerging topical botanical therapies for acne.
  2. Participants will be able to summarize evidence for aromatherapy and essential oils in acne therapy.
  3. Participants will be able to discuss safety concerns and potential limitations on the use of topical botanical agents.

Description: The connections between gut and skin, and food and skin, are continuing to be elucidated. Research is still limited, but correlations between specific dietary interventions and acne are more clearly illuminated by currently available data. This lecture outlines evidence-based diet recommendations for the prevention and treatment of acne and rosacea

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to summarize the current evidence regarding the role diet plays in both acne and rosacea.
  2. Participants will be able to compare the connection between the gut microbiome and acne and rosacea, and how nutrition impacts the gut microbiota.

Panelists: Joseph Alban, MS LAc, Lauren Vreeland, ND, and Reena Rupani, MD

Description: Acne and rosacea have many different presentations, and this panel will focus on a variety of cases. Diagnostic approaches and treatments will be discussed in the context of the severity of the presentation and the need for collaborative perspectives and care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to evaluate variants of acne and choose medications and supplements based on clinical presentation.
  2. Participants will be able to contrast variants of rosacea and which subtypes are most amenable to medications.

Description: We will dig into the reason why most people are overweight. It’s not just what you eat, but when and why. Many are stuck in a hormonal dysregulation problem that they are blaming on willpower, when in fact it is just skills they need to learn to undo the decades of misinformation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify the main hormones related to weight issues.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss simple lifestyle changes you can make to fix this hormonal weight problem.
  3. Participants will be able to recall examples of common fasting patterns.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis with Chinese Herbal Medicine by Trevor Erikson D-TCM | 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM PST ” _builder_version=”3.8″]

Description: Clinical trials have shown Chinese herbal medicines to be safe and effective for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic eczema. Of special interest was that many patients continued to have stable skin one year later. This ability to escort the atopic eczema patient from acute flare to healthy skin is best achieved through two stages of treatment, aptly named clearing and supplementing. Case study presentations will be used to exemplify this important therapeutic approach when seeking to stabilize the atopic patient with Chinese herbal medicine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define two stages of treatment used when prescribing herbal medicine for atopic dermatitis.
  2. Participants will be able to assess case-based evidence for the treatment of atopic dermatitis with herbal medicines.
  3. Participants will be able to review published research for the treatment of atopic dermatitis using Chinese herbal medicine.

Description: Both Ayurvedic and Chinese medical traditions have a long history of using herbal formulations that are tailored to support an individual’s unique presentation and constitution. This workshop will review some of the basic methods used by each tradition when evaluating the dermatology patient and how this is used to develop herbal formulas. Basic formulation theory, from both traditions, will be outlined using several practical examples.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will review the basics of the Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine evaluation in dermatology and how these biochemically correlate to the western Dermatology approach.
  2. Participants will evaluate the evidence for the use of herbs and their dosing.
  3. Participants will summarize the effects of different herbs and how they can be tailored toward different Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine imbalances.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Mindfulness: The Antidote to Stress and Aging by Keira Barr, MD | 9:00am-9:30am PST ” _builder_version=”3.8″]

Description: Upwards of 90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and skin issues are no exception. There is a growing body of research highlighting the intricate and intimate connection between our emotional health and skin health. Evidence suggests that chronic psychological stress activates the autonomic nervous system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the renin-angiotensin system when the body attempts to manage real or perceived threats to homeostasis. Chronic immune dysfunction, increased production of reactive oxygen species, and DNA damage, which are known to contribute to the aging and inflammation of skin, result from prolonged stimulation of these pathways. Addressing the mechanisms by which stress leads to immune dysfunction, oxidative radicals, and ultimately DNA damage via neuronal, endocrine, and immune modulation present additional interventions for skin aging and inflammation. In addition to addressing the impact of the exposome on skin health, mind-body medicine techniques like mindfulness and meditation can be of  therapeutic benefit to minimize skin aging and inflammation.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Participants will be able to describe the role of chronic stress and the impact it has on skin, aging, and hormone imbalance.
    2. Participants will be able to examine the role of mindfulness as a clinical tool and treatment strategy.
    3. Participants will be able to identify and assess the safety, evidence, and role of hormone replenishment in modulating the effects of stress.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Using Botanical Medicine in Dermatology: What’s the Evidence? by Julie Greenberg, ND | 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM” _builder_version=”3.8″]

Description: According to a 2018 survey, approximately 75% of adults take dietary supplements with 41% of adults taking herbal and botanical products. Of note to dermatologists, approximately a quarter of the people age 18-54 who take supplements are using them to improve their hair, skin and nails. More and more patients are coming in asking for “natural medicine,” and health care practitioners need to be knowledgeable in order to make informed treatment decisions as well as to safely guide patients and answer their questions. Botanical medicine has been used by traditional cultures for thousands of years, and it can offer effective treatment options and greatly expand a practitioner’s tool kit. This presentation will review the latest research-based clinical evidence for using botanicals to treat common dermatological conditions. The focus will be on readily-accessible botanicals that practitioners can start using immediately to safely improve treatment outcomes in their patients.

    Learning Objectives:
