Challenges in detecting erythema and rash in patients living with cancer with darker skin are not well documented in the medical literature [1]. There is a lack of visual representation of various skin types in common teaching texts which can result in a delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis in patients with darker skin. In fact, a recent study in 2018 demonstrated that only 4.5% of images in medical textbooks represented darker skin tones. Men of color are greatly affected by this lack of awareness and representation in the oncology community and how to find solutions to any of their skin care needs affected by cancer treatments.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to discuss how men of color are affected by living with cancer.
2. Participants will be able to compare the differences between men's and women's skin.
3. Participants will be able to recall the Fitzpatrick scale and how the compromised melanated skin responds to environmental damage and disease.Speaker
