Research Spotlight • AAD 2026

Understanding the Burden of Pyoderma Gangrenosum

A retrospective study using a US administrative claims database examined mortality and adverse outcomes among patients identified with pyoderma gangrenosum (PG).

The findings were presented for scientific exchange at the AAD 2026 Annual Meeting, March 27-31, 2026.

Mortality and Adverse Outcomes in Patients with PG in a US Administrative Claims Database

Arash Mostaghimi, Brigham and Women's Hospital • AAD 2026

13.9%

of patients with PG died within one year of claims-based PG identification.*

Crude all-cause mortality; incident PG cohort, N=1,663.
51.7%

of patients were hospitalized for any cause within one year of claims-based PG identification.*

One-year post-index subset, n=1,158.
44.6%

of patients were diagnosed with a serious infection within one year of claims-based PG identification.*

Same post-index subset, n=1,158. Relationship to PG or treatment is uncertain.
Study Context and Limitations:

These findings are from a retrospective, claims-based cohort study using Optum Clinformatics® Data Mart. They describe observed outcomes and do not establish that PG or its treatment caused them.

*Identification date was defined as the third unique PG claim within 365 days following a PG-free period of at least 365 days. One year after claims-based identification may be up to two years after the first PG diagnosis code.
